CustomsLink Update

In the latest version of CustomsLink, customers will notice changes in how EU Preference claims are managed (particularly with the change of document codes used to declare preferential origin for goods entering the UK from the EU).

A key change is the replacement of older CDS codes with new, more precise ones to improve clarity and compliance.

Exporter's Statement on Origin (Single Shipment)

Use this when the exporter provides a statement on origin specifically covering one shipment. The statement should appear on the commercial invoice or another trade document. The document reference is usually the invoice number. A valid REX number (Registered Exporter) must be included if the shipment’s value exceeds €6,000 or £5,400.

U117

Importer’s Knowledge Claim

Use this when you, the importer, have your own supporting proof that the goods qualify as EU-originating. You don't have a statement from the exporter but hold evidence such as production or supplier records. You must provide a document reference number in the declaration linked to your internal evidence. If the value exceeds €6,000 or £5,400, you must also include the supplier’s REX number. Keep supporting evidence for at least four years.

U118

Exporter’s Long-Term Statement on Origin (Multiple Shipments)

Use this for multiple shipments of identical goods covered by a valid long-term statement on origin from the exporter. The statement covers shipments over a defined period (up to 12 months). Reference the invoice or shipment document. The statement must mention “EU”, “Union”, or “European Union” and include a REX number if above the value threshold.

Why These Changes Matter to You

These updated codes make your customs declarations clearer and more compliant with UK-EU trade rules. Using the right code shows customs how you support your claim for preferential tariffs whether through an exporter’s statement or your own evidence.

Including correct document references and REX numbers when required helps avoid delays, inspections, or rejection of your goods at customs. It also creates a solid audit trail, preparing you in case of HMRC review.
