CL Temporary Admissions

This is a customs process used to import goods into IE or NI on a temporary basis.

According to official UK Government guidance:

Goods placed under Temporary Admission are not intended to undergo any change, except normal depreciation caused by the use they were made for.

A Temporary Admission is often the better option for one-off transporters, especially where the value of the goods is less than 6,000 €.

It just so happens that we offer a service to simplify this process for you.

How do I apply for a Temporary Admission?

This will depend on where you will be importing your goods.

For imports into the Republic of Ireland, we will send you an Irish Revenue form to complete. From there, we will process your information and complete the Temporary Admission on your behalf.

For Northern Irish imports however, we will send over a list of information we require from you. Once this has been received, we will process and complete your Temporary Admission.

Am I eligible for a Temporary Admission?

This will depend on a number of factors. For example, freight forwarders, customs agents and fast parcel operators are not eligible for a Temporary Admission.

Transporting goods with a value of more than 6,000 € may also prevent you from being eligible.

Alternatively, you can apply for an ATA Carnet - an international document that allows the temporary export and import of non-perishable goods for up to one year.

Similar to a Temporary Admission, an ATA Carnet must return to the country of origin (although it is possible to transport your goods to multiple countries with an ATA Carnet).

An ATA Carnet, which can only be retrieved from the your local Chamber of Commerce, is more expensive than a Temporary Admission and can take a significant amount of time if it is not an emergency ATA Carnet.

Do I need an ATA Carnet or Temporary Admission?

This will depend on the nature of the goods that you are transporting.

Generally speaking, a Temporary Admission is required for transporting goods temporarily and on a one-off basis. This is only feasible if the goods will be returned in the same or similar condition - for example, construction tools.

On the other hand, there are many instances where traders will require repeat declarations. For these customers an ATA Carnet may be more suitable. For example, if you are exhibiting in several countries in a 12 month period or taking a racing car to various race tracks, an ATA Carnet is ideal.
